The Cranberries' hit 'Zombie' named among list of Spotify's 'Top 50 Lockdown Songs'
THE CRANBERRIES’ iconic hit Zombie has been named on a list of the Top 50 most popular songs to listen to during lockdown. A total of 500 public Spotify lockdown playlists have been analysed as part of research commissioned by Delight Counselling, with some 31,562 songs sorted through as part of the study. Interestingly, the findings showed that 70% of the top 50 artists were male, 24% were female and just 6% were bands with both male and females. The Cranberries were among the latter, with the band’s 1994 hit Zombie coming in at a credible 17th on the countdown. The top 50 songs have ranked by the number of times they appeared in the public playlists. Advertisement In some instances, some songs appeared the same number of times, this resulted in a tie. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Bee Gees topped the list with their disco hit Stayin’ Alive, which featured on no fewer than 44 different lockdown playlists. Aside from The Cranberries, however, there was little in the way of an Irish presence on the list with the…
Gardai come to the rescue of Dublin fox found trapped in fencing during routine patrol
GARDAI CAME to the rescue of a stricken fox in Dublin over the weekend. While Garda officers are no strangers to people getting themselves into all kinds of bother on a night out, animals are an altogether different story. As a rule, foxes tend to keep well clear of humans – there’s a fair bit of history between the two sides. However, that wasn’t an option for one stricken Reynard over in Ballyfermot, Dublin. It was during a routine patrol of the area that officers were alerted to the animal’s plight. Advertisement Upon closer inspection, they found a fox completely stuck in a bit of metal fencing close to the roadside. The animal appeared to be in some distress too and, try as he might, was unable to get himself free. Thankfully, Gardai were on hand to deal with the situation. Recent weeks have seen the officers tasked with any number of duties aimed at helping people in the wider community and lifting spirits as a whole. This particular incident may have differed slightly, but the officers involved nevertheless…
Restarting public Masses early would ‘suffering and loss of life'
ANY REINSTATEMENT of public Masses ahead of schedule would be “grossly irresponsible”, a group representing Catholic Priests in Ireland has warned. Under the current government guidelines, public Masses are due to be reinstated on July 20, provided COVID-19 cases numbers in Ireland continue to decline. However, there have been calls among certain religious groups for Masses to be exempt from these rules and reopened earlier than planned. The Association of Catholic Priests (ACP), which represents more than 1,000 priests across Ireland, has condemned calls for public masses to be reinstated ahead of, warning that any early restart would “lead to loss of life”. In a statement issued over the weekend, the ACP hit out at those pushing for any early reopenings as "promoting their own self-serving and self-interested agendas". “In these circumstances, leaders in Irish society – not least the leaders of the Christian churches – will be expected to give a robust and responsible example,” the ACP said. Tributes paid as Liverpool’s Bishop Malone succumbs to Covid-19
BISHOP Vincent Malone, the auxiliary bishop of Liverpool Archdiocese, has died after contracting coronavirus. He was admitted to the Royal Liverpool Hospital earlier this month but died on Monday, May 18. Tributes have been paid to the bishop, who was born in Liverpool. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leading Catholic prelate in England and Wales, lived alongside the bishop in the city "as a fairly young priest". He described Bishop Malone as having "endless patience" in his parish and ecclesiastical work, and always showing "unfailing courtesy with every person he met". The Archbishop of Liverpool Malcolm McMahon spoke of Bishop Malone’s “massive contribution to the life of the local church”. Advertisement A statement from the Archdiocese of Liverpool added: "It is with great sadness that the death is announced of the Right Reverend Vincent Malone, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Liverpool and Titular Bishop of Abora. May he rest in peace." The bishop, ordained a priest in 1955, held many high posts, both academic…
'Our clubs may not survive' Calls for support fund to protect Irish sports organisations during pandemic
CONCERNS for the future of sporting organisations across Ireland have led to the call for a support fund to be established to see them through the coronavirus pandemic. The Federation of Irish Sport has called on the Government to create a Resilience Fund and set up a task force to ensure “the survival and reignition of sport organisations nationwide”. The Federation, whose members include the 81 National Governing Bodies and 29 Local Sports Partnerships that organise sport and physical activity in Ireland, issued a statement on behalf of those members this week - claiming the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have been devastating for them. “There has been no organised sport in Ireland for 10 weeks,” they said. “The stark reality is that the knock-on effects of Covid-19 financially for all sports organisations in the country are devastating.” Advertisement They explained: “Within the last week, we have seen a number of our major team sports talk publicly of losses up to 70 per cent of their turnover. “Unfortunately…
Irish nurse turned MP calls for joined-up healthcare approach to pandemic
AN IRISH MP who returned to nursing to support the battle against Covid-19 believes health and social care must become “one united front” to overcome the virus. Maria Caulfield, the Conservative MP for Lewes, returned to the NHS in March as a cancer nurse treating patients with Covid-19 at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Brompton. She had answered the appeal by Health Secretary Matt Hancock for former doctors and nurses to help support medical efforts during the coronavirus outbreak. Ms Caulfield, who was born in Wandsworth, London in 1973, to parents who came to Britain in the 1950s from counties Longford and Cork, has seen first-hand the need for a ‘joined-up’ social welfare system that would see both care homes and hospitals working in tandem. She told The Irish Post: “When the coronavirus crisis first hit, it was clear the NHS was going to come under huge pressure. Advertisement “I wanted to do my bit to help out. I still had my nursing registration and so I returned to my old hospital working on the wards.…
Footage of Leo Varadkar meeting friends and enjoying sun in Phoenix Park during lockdown sparks fury online
LEO VARADKAR has denied any breach of Ireland’s COVID-19 restrictions after pictures surfaced on social media of the Taoiseach meeting up with friends in Phoenix Park. Mr. Varadkar was photographed enjoying the sunshine with his partner Matthew Barrett and two other friends in the popular Dublin Park. Gardai can be seen walking near Mr. Varadkar’s group but do not appear to have been deployed to assist or support the Taoiseach in any way. The images, which were captured this past Sunday afternoon, have sparked debate online over whether the Taoiseach is in breach of the social distancing rules in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Under the government rules, groups of four are permitted to meet outside. Advertisement However, they are restricted from travelling further than 5km from their homes and groups must remain two metres apart from anyone they are not currently residing with. Phoenix Park is roughly eight kilometres from Mr. Varadkar’s apartment on Carpenterstown Road in the Dublin West constituency.…

COVID-19 patients treated with convalescent plasma
LOMA LINDA (INT) - Loma Linda University Health is currently treating eligible patients battling severe novel coronavirus (COVID-19) with convalescent plasma in hopes of boosting their ability to fight the virus. The patients are treated while in the hospital through a transfusion of serum containing virus-neutralizing antibodies, which were removed from a recovered individuals donated blood. Tait Stevens, MD, president of medical staff at Loma Linda University Medical Center, said some evidence shows that patients currently suffering from COVID-19 recover better if they receive plasma from those who have previously recovered. Stevens cited a study published in April that showed encouraging results from 10 severe adult cases who received the convalescent plasma, maintained or increased the antibodies and went on to recover. This study showed promising results, and we want to do everything we can to continue this fight against COVID-19, Stevens said. Rohith Mohan, MD, a second-year pediatric resident at Loma…

Waning days of May generate summer-like heat
SOUTHLAND - (INT) - A strong ridge of high pressure is building over California giving the Southland some pre-summer temperatures this week. The highest numbers will bring an Excessive Heat Warning to the deserts through Friday where highs in the Coachella Valley could approach 110. Triple digits are likely across the inland valleys. There is a sharp thermal transition between the deserts and the coast where a strong inversion may lead to some May Gray. A sea breeze and a shallow marine layer will cover the beaches. By Friday, look for a cut-off low to approach the coast helping to flatten the intense high pressure ridge. That should help spread cooling inland.
California faith-based organizations given go-ahead to open places of worship
INLAND EMPIRE (INT) Leaders of churches, temples, synagogues and mosques are considering reopening their places of worship after state officials issued guidance Monday to allow religious services throughout California. Services may begin immediately provided attendees are limited to 25 percent of normal room occupancy or 100 people, whichever is fewer. That could limit attendance at so-called mega-churches, but allow for reopening others with smaller congregations. Other guidelines issued by the state include: Conduct individual forehead temperature checks Strongly consider discontinuing singing or group recitations Implement social distancing measures Consider outside services Discourage sharing of items, handholding, touching or kissing of relics Disinfect common areas Consider disposable seat covers Install hand sanitizer dispensers Church leaders are urged to continue online services and activities, especially for the protection of those who are most at risk from COVID-19, including older…
Pain wrenched Cheri Armstrong from her slumber. "I just shot up out of bed"
SEATTLE - Pain wrenched Cheri Armstrong from her slumber. "I just shot up out of bed," said Armstrong, 69. "It wouldn't go away." She thought the squeeze radiating between her shoulders was a muscle cramp. She twisted, walked and paced for about five minutes before it subsided. Her husband, Richard Armstrong, urged her that April Saturday to go to the emergency room. "The last place I'm going is a COVID-19 hospital," Cheri Armstrong remembers telling him. The pain receded, only to spike sporadically over the next days - twinges of tightness. By Monday evening, though, it had worsened and migrated to her jaw. "We're going to the emergency room," Richard said. Doctors soon whisked her through tests and delivered the news Cheri suspected: She had suffered a heart attack. "Her artery was about 99% blocked," said Dr. Daniel Guerra, a cardiologist at MultiCare Pulse Heart Institute in Tacoma. "She was lucky she didn't have a big heart attack." Armstrong's story illustrates a growing concern. Beginning in March, public…
Memorial Day: Stay-home orders present challenges for veterans
SAN DIEGO - Stay-at-home orders enacted nationwide in March were seen as necessary, if unprecedented, as the spread of the novel coronavirus threatened to overwhelm hospitals. However, the wide societal shutdown also disrupted the support systems and coping routines of many veterans living with physical and mental health challenges, according to experts and veterans organizations. Stress and isolation are major issues - for some, those conditions can lead to thoughts of suicide. Dr. Neal Doran, who manages the suicide prevention team for the San Diego Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, said stress within the home and the loss of a work routine can be challenging for people living with mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder. "One big piece of it is not being able to get away from any disagreement (in the home)," he said. "There's no opportunity to step away and go do something else. Everybody's routine is disrupted." Shari Houser, director of the San Diego Steven A. Cohen Military Family…
