SOUTHLAND – (INT) – Supply and demand is pushing gasoline prices higher as the COVID-19 lock-down eases and people become more mobile. Prices are moving closer to 3-dollars-a-gallon. The Automobile Club’s Gas Watch puts the California average for 87-octane regular at $2.88. In the Riverside-San Bernardino area, pump prices gained 6-cents-a-gallon the past week for an average of $2.85. “Gas price averages continue to be more than a dollar lower than this time last year and more than 60 cents lower than at the beginning of March when the pandemic began affecting gasoline demand,” Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring said.

SACRAMENTO – (INT) - The Education Coalition, comprised of the nine statewide K-12 education associations that work to advocate for the six million students in California’s public schools and colleges, urged California’s lawmakers to adopt a funding solution to the COVID-19-related budget crisis in the June budget. The group said that without adequate funding, schools cannot open on time safely. Under the Governor’s proposed budget, a 10% cut ($6.5 billion) to the Local Control Funding Formula equates to: • Cutting $1,230 per student, or • Cutting $21,667 per classroom, or • Increasing class sizes by 19%, or • Laying off more than 57,600 teachers, or • Laying off more than 125,000 education support professionals. Nationally, among children age 12 and under, the rate is up 14 points—from about 3% in 2018 to 17% in April 2020. During the ongoing COVID-19 school closures, even large districts appear to be serving fewer free and low-cost meals than before the pandemic, while rural or small districts face their own challenges in reaching students. Typically about 3.7 million California students, or 60%, qualify for free or reduced-price meals, a number that likely shot up under shelter-in-place orders. When classes are in session, these students may receive most of their food at school. Since schools closed in March, districts have set up more than 4,700 grab-and-go sites to continue providing meals to students, the Public Policy Institute of California found. Homeowners who rent single occupancy residences for short-term stays may resume operations in Riverside County. Operators should implement safety precautions and disinfectant protocols outlined in the local guidance developed by the Riverside County Economic Recovery Task Force. This directive does not include hotels, motels and inns, which the State of California has prohibited as part of the statewide stay-at-home order. However, in alignment with other Southern Californian counties, short-term vacation rentals at single occupancy homes may resume. The Riverside County guidance includes the following: • Rentals allowed in private homes where the guest rents the entire home and does not share any common areas with others.
