School districts struggle with student food insecurity
SACRAMENTO (INT) - Food insecurityeither concerns around having enough food or outright hungerhas increased sharply across California. Nationally, among children age 12 and under, the rate is up 14 pointsfrom about 3% in 2018 to 17% in April 2020. During the ongoing COVID-19 school closures, even large districts appear to be serving fewer free and low-cost meals than before the pandemic, while rural or small districts face their own challenges in reaching students. Typically about 3.7 million California students, or 60%, qualify for free or reduced-price meals, a number that likely shot up under shelter-in-place orders. When classes are in session, these students may receive most of their food at school. Since schools closed in March, districts have set up more than 4,700 grab-and-go sites to continue providing meals to students, the Public Policy Institute of California found. Many districts provide meals to everyone under the age of 18. San Diego Unified is distributing one extra breakfast and lunch to…

Short-term rentals, cool centers reopening
INLAND EMPIRE (INT) With thoughts of summer vacation, Riverside County is easing restrictions on short-term rentals. Homeowners who rent single occupancy residences for short-term stays may resume operations in Riverside County. Operators should implement safety precautions and disinfectant protocols outlined in the local guidance developed by the Riverside County Economic Recovery Task Force. This directive does not include hotels, motels and inns, which the State of California has prohibited as part of the statewide stay-at-home order. However, in alignment with other Southern Californian counties, short-term vacation rentals at single occupancy homes may resume. The Riverside County guidance includes the following: Rentals allowed in private homes where the guest rents the entire home and does not share any common areas with others. Home-sharing is not allowed. No events or group gatherings are permitted until approved by the State of California. Only guests registered for the home should be on premise.…

Understanding court cases and their settlement
"It would be best if settlement is pursued and achieved without the needless filing of court cases." Substantive laws and the Rules of Court are passed with policies to allow aggrieved individuals, juridical entities, and entities authorized by the law to institute actions to vindicate rights violated or seek redress for breach of rights from the court. The aggrieved may file civil or criminal actions: civil actions are commenced for the protection of a right or prevention of a wrong (Section 3 (a), Rule 1 of the Rules of Civil Procedure) while criminal actions are initiated by the State to prosecute an offender for an act or omission punishable by law (Section 3 (b), Rule 1 of the Rules of Civil Procedure). There is another type of action which is loosely treated in practice as civil actions since it seeks no penal sanction but is a remedy sought by a litigant to establish a status, a right, or a particular fact – these are known as special proceedings (Section 3 (c), Rule 1 of the Rules of Court).

Coronavirus in Oklahoma: Initiative petition on redistricting clears one hurdle, but faces unclear future
The wording of an initiative petition calling for a public vote on the creation of a Citizens' Independent Redistricting Commission is legally adequate, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. That doesn't mean Oklahomans will necessarily get to vote on the issue in November. In fact, what happens next is up in the air due to COVID-19. "That is the question of the week," said Andy Moore, who heads the group advocating for State Question 810, which seeks to depoliticize the process of re-drawing Oklahoma's congressional and legislative districts, a process that takes place after every 10-year census.

Police later found 480 marijuana plants grown by Bratcher without proper license, according to authorities. Bratcher was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on a complaint of illegal cultivation of marijuana. TULSA — Some state and local officials, including Gov. Kevin Stitt, got a chance to make their case for Tesla in Tulsa at a dinner in Florida this week with Elon Musk. Musk and the Tulsans were guests of National Aeronautics and Space Administration Administrator Jim Bridenstine for Wednesday’s planned launch of a SpaceX rocket carrying two NASA astronauts into space. The launch was postponed because of weather conditions, but the Tulsa delegation was able to make an in-person pitch to Musk for his new Tesla Cybertruck factory. Musk is the CEO and product architect of Tesla and founder of SpaceX. The Associated Press recently reported that Tulsa and Austin, Texas, were finalists for the new plant.

Several Native American tribes criticized the original rule, opposing it due to rural Alaskans needing wild food sources. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) cheered the reversal, saying it was necessary "not only as a matter of principle, but as a…

Russian Air Force eliminates several ISIS terrorists in central Syria
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:20 A.M.) – The Russian Air Force carried out a number of airstrikes over central and northern Syria on Thursday, causing significant damage to the Islamic State’s (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) dens and fortifications. According to reports, the Russian Air Force pounded the Islamic State’s positions in the Al-Raqqa and Homs governorates, killing and wounding several terrorists in the process. The reports said the Russian Air Force carried out these strikes in retaliation for the Islamic State’s heavy attack on the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions near the Al-Thawrah Oil Fields in the southern region of the Al-Raqqa Governorate. These airstrikes by the Russian Air Force marked the first time since March that they have launched any aerial attack over Syria. In addition to the Russian airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) also carried out an attack on the Islamic State’s positions in southern Al-Raqqa.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:30 A.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) launched a heavy attack on the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions in southern Al-Raqqa on late Thursday, resulting in heavy casualties for all involved. According to a field report from southern Al-Raqqa, the Islamic State launched an attack on the Syrian Army’s positions near the Al-Thawrah Oil Field, which led to a series of intense clashes that lasted for a short while. The report said the Islamic State was able to temporarily penetrate the Syrian Army’s positions before reinforcements from the National Defense Forces (NDF) arrived to help drive back the terrorist combatants in southern Al-Raqqa. At least a half dozen Syrian Arab Army soldiers and over ten Islamic State terrorists were killed during this intense battle. Following this battle, the Russian and Syrian air forces carried out several strikes over the Islamic State’s positions between the Homs and Al-Raqqa governorates.
