Robert Mugabe’s Lingering ‘Good’ Legacy?
He was Africa’s archetypal icon of post-colonial totalitarianism. Charismatic. Educated. Feared. Endowed with racist tribal arrogance. Unforgiving. 37 years of iron-fisted rule, Mugabe plundered all known indices of democratic decency. He ruthlessly suppressed opposition – incarcerating its leaders, mass-murdering their supporters. He habitually insulted Western leaders, decimated private property rights. Under his rule, cronies blossomed as inflation broke all post World War 2 records. By the time he was deposed in a ‘decent’ military coup, Zimbabwe was in a tailspin of obscene poverty. Despised by the international community, loathed by liberals and social democrats alike.

New York's oldest Irish pub reopens after longest closure in 166-year history
ONE OF New York City’s oldest and most iconic Irish pubs has reopened for business after its longest closure in 166 years of business. McSorley’s Old Ale House in the East Village closed its doors back on March 17, a week after the city’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, postponed the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. Though McSorley’s initially continued to operate takeout orders, business proved slow, prompting the bar’s owner to shut the pub entirely. The fact this legendary Irish pub stayed shut for two whole months is a measure of how seriously Covid-19 impacted life in New York – one of the worst-hit US states for coronavirus. Incredibly, McSorley’s previously stayed open during the American Civil War and also through the Spanish flu pandemic of the early 20th century. Advertisement “When John McSorley died in 1910, the bar was shut down for a week. Hurricane Sandy shut the door for a week,” Gregory de la Haba, a bartender and the husband of McSorley’s owner, told Time Out. “This is unprecedented for sure.” Now,…

One rule for them, another for you – how the coronavirus became political
THE coronavirus is not political. It is an act of nature. It is random fate. It arrived in these green Irish hills. It arrived on English streets. It arrived in the vast spaces of the USA. It arrived on the warm beaches of Brazil. It arrived everywhere. The world scrabbled to deal with it and even the best made it up as they went along. Advertisement The stark biology of it made us confront the simple, human, fact of our own mortality. It was inevitable, too, that there would be mistakes. Ireland’s death rate, for instance, could have been better. We locked down just that little bit too late. We made mistakes with our nursing homes that constitute a pretty damaging oversight. Each and every death was a sadness and even as I write this, with our first day without a single coronavirus death just announced, we remember that. Yet, just as the virus itself was not political, the response to it clearly was. It cannot be an accident, even to the most willingly biased, that the countries with the worst global death rates…

Families could soon be able to see loved ones in nursing homes again under plans for outdoor visits
Families could soon be able to pay outdoor visits to relatives in nursing homes, under plans being discussed by government officials. The introduction of outdoor visits, while maintaining social distancing, is one option being discussed by the National Public Health Emergency Team. It comes amid growing concerns over the impact the current ban on all visits may be having on the mental health of care home residents across Ireland. Under the Irish government’s current schedule for lifting lockdown, visitors will not be allowed to return to nursing homes until June 29 at the earliest. However, Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, has said they are looking to find a “creative” solution to help elderly residents reconnect with loves ones. Advertisement He said: “These are people who are at advanced age in life and they are being cut off for extended periods of time from families. “And then the challenge that that has in maintaining not just their mental health but their physical health and mobility. “And…

Offaly GAA club foot turf in the bog for elderly and vulnerable in community
AN OFFALY GAA club has been helping out in the community since the coronavirus pandemic began, and now as summer hits Ireland, there's an important annual job to be done. Members of Daingean GAA club have taken to the bog to foot turf for the elderly and vulnerable in the community-- many of whom would have done the job themselves each summer since they were children but who now have to remain inside to protect themselves from coronavirus. The club have always been community-minded, and their members have been helping the vulnerable with food deliveries, meals on wheels and prescriptions, but the idea to get their athletic members to do the "back breaking" but essential job of footing turf is arguably their most important act yet. Daingean GAA - Turf Footing / Facebook Advertisement Daingean launched their campaign-- called the Turf-a-Thon-- at the beginning of May, calling on vulnerable members of the community to let them know if they needed help. The club wrote on Facebook at the time: "Daingean GAA would…

'Dial-a-pint' delivery service where you can rent your own barman launches in Galway
ANYONE FEELING thirsty? Galway has just gotten its own version of the newly popular pint delivery service, as iconic city pub Monroe's has launched the aptly named 'Dial-a-pint'. As you might have guessed from the name, the Monroe's Dial-a-pint allows you to get freshly poured pints delivered straight to your door-- but there's a bit more to it than that. DIAL-A-PINT (Monroe's Galway) Advertisement Rather than just dropping the pints and going, the pintman van (Yes, that's what it's called) will stay with you for between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how many pints you've ordered, and the bartender will serve you as if you're in a pub. There's a minimum order of ten pints-- no messing around here!-- with a choice of either Guinness or Heineken, so the cider lovers will still be drinking cans for now. Each pint is €6, with free delivery and a free barman included in the deal, which is not too shabby-- and the owners have tested a few pints and confirmed they taste absolutely class. The pintman van is good…

Constitution not a suicide pact, allowing us to ignore duties
In 1949, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson asserted that “The Constitution is not a suicide pact.” His perspective reflected concerns of government officials throughout American history. The gist of his statement is that our constitutional protections often conflict and require balance in favor of healthy, non-violent existence; in giving priority to a greater constitutional good. No rights are absolute, let alone all of the time. I believe Justice Jackson’s statement goes to the heart of our conflict between government protection from Covid-19, an extremely dangerous virus, and people who claim that government enforcement of those same protections violates a constitutional right. These people use the “right” to justify ignoring the science that guides government protections.

Why the Cummings crisis is now all about how Johnson governs
Danny Kruger, the young Tory MP who is an old friend of Dominic Cummings and his spouse, got it right last night. The “affaire Cummings” - as the French would put it - is no longer about the most powerful aide to the prime minister and the minutiae of how he interpreted coronavirus quarantine rules differently from most of the country. Kruger argued that attacks on Cummings are attacks on Boris Johnson, because the PM has so conspicuously become Cummings’s human shield. So as another Tory MP told me - a grandee no less - this is now all about the PM himself and how he governs. It is about why Boris Johnson rates Cummings so highly, and why he needs him at the centre of his government.
