Arrests, beatings and dismissals of journalists underline official, corporate arbitrariness: SAMDEN

NEW DELHI, May 26: The South Asia Media Defenders Network (SAMDEN) today cited detention of media professionals in Bangladesh, attacks on journalists in the Punjab, and the dismissal of a pregnant reporter in Assam state as part of a pattern of official and corporate arbitrariness against media in the region. In Bangladesh, SAMDEN noted that the government of Sheikh Hasina Wajed has used the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA), passed in 2018 amid opposition from national, international media and rights groups, to arrest or charge at least 20 journalists over the past month. In one case, a senior journalist vanished in March after a politician from the governing Awami League party filed a criminal defamation case against him. The reporter mysteriously turned up at the India-Bangladesh border nearly two months later and was slapped with three cases under the DSA while senior editor, Matiur Rahman Choudhury of Manabzamin also is accused in the case. India has lowest fatality rate, claims health ministry

NEW DELHI, May 26: The Health Ministry on Tuesday reeled out statistics to claim India is among the countries having the lowest COVID-19 fatality rate but ruled out complete end of the lockdowns since the battle against the dreaded virus has to go on as India won't be immune from it in the near future. Its joint secretary Lav Srivastava told a Press conference here that India's fatality rate has come down from 3% to 2.87% compared to the world's rate of 4%. The average fatality rate per lakh the world over is 4.5 per lakh population while it is 0.3 deaths per lakh in India. At the same time, he said the recovery rate is also improving to 41.61.He factored this success to an early lockdown, social distancing and increase of the health infrastructure. As ICMR director general Balram Bhargav pointed out India had just one lab in Pune for testing but the ramp up resulted in 612 labs testing in more than one shift, 480 of which are the government labs and remaining private. In reply to a question, Dr Bhargav remained…

Can Humanism Survive the Onslaught of Hate?

"In another incidence one worker, who had a differently-abled child, took the bicycle of another person, leaving a touching letter of apology, saying that he was helpless as he has to travel with his children and there is no other means. Many a people reported it as a theft of the bicycle while the owner of the bicycle, Prabhu Dayal took it in a stride."Lately when India is undergoing the massive crisis of the Corona epidemic and the offshoots of its mishandling, we have also seen the pandemic being used to demonise a particular community in India. These hate mongers, operating through powerful medium of TV, and widespread social media which also has resorted to Fake news has intensified the Hate against religious minority. In this vast phenomenon, it seemed that all is lost as far as amity between people of different religions is concerned. Despite this broad generalisation one feels happy when one comes to know of few incidents where religious communities come forward to help each other. The most touching such…
